NAIDOC Week 2020: Always Was, Always Will Be

NAIDOC week is an annual event that invites all Australians to celebrate the incredible history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, who have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.

To celebrate the opening of NAIDOC Week, Darling Harbour hosted a welcome to the country and smoking ceremony in front of our art exhibition ‘Here I Am: Art by Great Women,’ which showcases eight contemporary Indigenous female artists from across Australia.

The Welcome to the Country was be given by a traditional owner of the land to acknowledge and show respect to First Nations custodians past and present. The Smoking Ceremony wards off bad spirits to clear a path for a brighter future. To close, Koomurri performed a traditional dance before our MC opened the art exhibition.
